Syllabus Generator

The Syllabus Generator streamlines lesson planning by letting you create a semester-long schedule in just a few clicks.

  1. Select a Course
    • Choose the course from the drop-down list. Only courses in your department are displayed.
  2. Add Course Content
    • Click + Add Day for Topics and Assignments to insert a new row.
    • Enter or paste the Topic and Assignment for that class meeting. Aim for roughly 40 instructional days per semester (blank cells are fine).
    • Reorder items within a column by dragging the sort icon. NOTE: Reordering a Topic does not move its Assignment, and vice versa.
    • Content added automatically saves as you enter it in and click away.
    • Use Delete to remove a row or Ignore to exclude it from the final syllabus—especially helpful when a term has fewer meeting days.
  3. Generate the Syllabus
    • Select the Term.
    • Check the Meeting Days (uncheck any day the class does not meet).
    • Click Generate Syllabus.
  4. Preview & Refine
    • A preview table appears with Date, Topic, Assignment, and Reminder (pulled from the current school calendar).
    • Gray rows mark days when the class does not meet; Final-Exam week stays active.
    • The standard five-day school week is outlined with a thick black border for easy reference.
    • Review the schedule. If adjustments are needed, update the Course Content section and click Generate Syllabus again.
  5. Export
    • Click Copy Syllabus to Clipboard and paste the table into Microsoft Word.
    • To post in Blackbaud, copy the table from Microsoft Word.

Note: If any reminders are missing or incorrect, please email Grey Gaillard at ggaillard@asms.net.

After your initial setup, only minor tweaks are needed for future semesters, saving you hours and letting you focus on what matters most: teaching!

The Course Content table displays information for the course currently selected in the drop-down menu. When the Syllabus Generator first loads, it defaults to the first course in the list. If you haven’t entered content for that specific course, the table will appear empty.

  1. Use the Course drop-down to select the class for which you previously entered Topics and Assignments.

  2. Your saved content will load automatically.

Content added in the Course Content section is automatically saved, so there’s no need to manually submit or save changes. Just make sure you’re viewing the correct course and term.

To create syllabi for different sections of the same course, start by entering all Topics and Assignments into the Course Content section. Use the Ignore button to exclude any rows that should not be included in the current section’s syllabus. You can also reorder Topics and Assignments independently using the sort icons next to each column.

Once the content is set for a specific section:

  1. Click Generate Syllabus to preview the schedule.

  2. Review the results and make any necessary adjustments.

  3. When satisfied, click Copy Syllabus to Clipboard and paste the table into your syllabus document.

After finishing one section, return to the Course Content, adjust which rows are ignored (or reorder content), and repeat the process for the next section. This allows you to efficiently generate customized syllabi while maintaining a single shared content structure.

If you accidentally delete a row, an alert will appear at the top of the Course Content section displaying the Topic and Assignment that were removed. To restore the deleted entry, simply copy the text from the alert and paste it into a new row using the + Add Day for Topics and Assignments button.

NOTE: The alert only retains information from the most recent deletion—any previously deleted rows will not be recoverable through the alert.
